It is a well-researched and entertaining tale of time travel set against the backdrop of the Whitechapel Murders (Jack the Ripper). "In the Autumn of the Unfortunates" tells the story of Jack the Ripper as seen through the eyes of painter Walter Sickert. Though history named him as a later-day suspect, Sickert was not implicated in the crimes at the time.

LONDON (AFP) - Jack the Ripper was short, stocky and about 30 years old -- "frighteningly normal" -- according to a profile of the notorious Victorian-era killer published using state-of-the-art technology.

In the profile, the man who strangled and butchered five London prostitutes looks probably very different from the man authorities were searching for at the time, police said Monday.

Laura Richards, head of analysis for the Metropolitan Police's Violent Crime Command, has drawn up what is believed to be the most accurate portrait of the murderer after analyzing evidence from the case using modern police techniques.

She claims that the evidence from 118 years ago shows that the ripper was between 25 and 35 years old, had a stocky build, and stood between five feet five inches and five feet seven inches tall.

The evidence can also likely locate where he lived.

"For the first time, we are able to understand the kind of person Jack the Ripper was," said Richards, who in the past has studied serial killer Fred West and Ian Huntley, who murdered two girls.

"We can name the street where he probably lived and we can see what he looked like; and we can explain, finally, why this killer eluded justice," Richards said.

Working alongside former Metropolitan Police commander John Grieve, she assembled experts like pathologists, historians and a geographical profiler to understand why the case was never solved and to see whether it still could be.

"This is further than anyone else has got. It would have been enough for coppers to get out and start knocking on doors... they would have got him," Grieve said.

Drawing on modern experience, the experts studied his legend, analyzed the Ripper's crimes and retraced his steps while examining 13 different witness statements taken at the time of the killings.

The details produced a picture of someone who was "perfectly sane, frighteningly normal, and yet capable of extraordinary cruelty," Richards said.

Grieve added: "It's a popular misconception that nobody ever saw the murderer, that he just vanished into the fog of London. Well that's just not right. There were witnesses at the time who were highly thought of by the police.

"If we were doing this investigation today, we could pool together all these descriptions and the kind of face that the police were clearly looking for. You could come up with a composite and you can go beyond just a full face, you can get something that really helps the police to look for suspects."

The results of the study will be broadcast on the Five television channel on Tuesday.

In January this year, Jack the Ripper was voted Britain's most hated individual in a BBC poll, which described him as the forerunner of modern serial killers.

Our Theories

A while back Chris asked what my theory was for who committed the Whitechapel Murders. I said I'd tell him but that I wanted to get my ducks in a row, so to speak, before I said anything. I thought instead of just my spouting off, we could all chime in and say what our theory is. Should make for some interesting conversation.

So, we've got five prostitutes murdered in the East End of London in 1888. Each was strangled, then had their throat slit. All of the victims except for Liz Stride were mutilated, with the mutilations becoming more vicious with each murder. The first victim, Polly Nichols, had her abdomen sliced open while the last, Mary Jane Kelly, was butchered beyond the ability to recognize her as human. One victim, Liz Stride (again) was not mutilated. It is suspected that the killer was interrupted and only had time to strangle her and slit her throat.

What do I think we have here? I think we're looking for a white male, in his 20s-30s. He was most likely a native of the East End or, at the very least, had lived there for a long time. I say that because of the way the killer was able to disappear through the maze of streets and back alleys that made up the East End. This was a man who was very, very comfortable in this territory. For this reason, I think we can rule out rich or upper-middle class men coming into Whitechapel and Spitalfields in search of a quick hook-up with a cheap whore. That's not to say these men didn't indulge in that sort of behavior, but I just don't think that men from that social strata would be that familiar with the East End.

I think the killer was a combination of the Organized and Disorganized Serial Killer types as specified by the FBI. He was able to lure the victims to an out of the way place and hold himself together long enough to fool them that he was just another trick. He brought along his tool (a knife appropriate for his work). The disorganized aspects he displayed come up in the savagery of his mutilations. His mutilations of their genitals, abdomen and (in the case of the last two victims) their faces show an attempt to depersonalize the victim. This is classic disorganized behavior.

I think the increasing savagery of the killings (check out the victims' photos posted in the photo section) shows that he was increasingly coming apart at the seams. The killing and mutilation of Mary Jane Kelly is beyond the pale. He may have killed himself. I believe the killings came to a halt after Kelly's death, because the police pulled their extra patrols off the street. The only time they do that is if the suspect is dead or incarcerated.

So, having written this incredibly long post (and please, for the love of God people, somebody else post their theory too!), who do I think he was? I think there are two prime suspects based on the two best known possibilities. One is Montague John Druitt, a failed lawyer who committed suicide shortly after Kelly's murder. The other is Aaron Kosminski, a Polish Jew who immigrated to the East End to avoid the pogroms in Eastern Europe and who was committed to a mental hospital after Kelly died.

Then again there is the possibility put forward by Donald Rumbelow, the note Ripper expert. He said that on judgment day when all of us who've tried to figure out who the killer is join and ask the killer to identify himself once and for all, there's a good possibility we'll all look at ourselves and say "Who's he?"

"The Ballad of the Witch Babies" and "Finit Coronet Opus."

Like most of the theories, I think its a little far fetched or unlikely to believe that because someone writes a story about killing a woman, that they could actually have done the deed. But it is interesting nonetheless.

I thought we could start a discussion on the best and worst Ripper books we've read.

My favorite "all-around" Ripper book is "The Complete Jack the Ripper" by Donald Rumbelow. This book came out in the 70s and hasn't been updated, mostly because it's still selling well and the publisher doesn't see a need for a new edition. This is a general history written by one of *the* experts on the case. It's definitely worth including in your library.

Another great one is "Jack the Ripper: A-Z." This is basically an encyclopedia of the case. There are so any names, places and dates involved in the case that it can be a bitch to keep it all straight, so this book is an invaluable resource.

Another book I'm really enjoying is "The Crimes, Detection and Death of Jack the Ripper" by Martin Fido. It's got really good maps of all five Canonical crime scenes and does a great job of giving the history, then offering a suspect that hadn't been suggested before.

The worst is, of course, Patricia Cornwell adventure in faulty logic "Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper - Case Closed." Her attempts to pin the killings on Sickert are nothing short of laughable. I'd suggest reading this claptrap if you have a lot of spare time, there's nothing good on TV, you've walked the dog and need a good laugh.

All I can say is report the words of the British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, when he said there are three types of lies. Lies, damned lies and statistics. That's the culprit here, mes amis, statistics. The flaw lies in the way the person who collected the data quoted in that report went about his work.

Raven asked a good question in her "OGD" thread: Why are we so fascinated with the Whitechapel killings? The Ripper was certainly not the first serial killer, nor the most prolific or the only one not to be caught.

I think it's really a combination of factors. First, the society was changing. The plight of the lower- and middle-classes was beginning to be recognized and efforts were being made to do something about it. People were beginning to stand up and demand better treatment, i.e. the vigilance committees and the trade unions.

Police work was changing as well. While police work depended largely on Bobbies on the beat, forensic science was just getting started. Some of the first crime scene photos were taken in the Ripper investigation, including the infamous photos of Mary Jane Kelly’s apartment. Coroners also played a role. The only real hope of catching the killer depended on catching him in the act, but detectives from the Municipal Police (Scotland Yard) and the City of London played a role.

You also had the rise of the media. The newspapers were just beginning to be a factor in society. The "journalists" of the day swarmed over the Whitechapel killings like locusts and a case can be made that the Ripper was the first big media case.

Then you had the dichotomies of the society that the case threw into focus. You had everything from the well-off police commissioner to middle class detectives and prostitutes who were considered below the lowest level of society. The crimes forced the society to look at the problems among the lower classes in Whitechapel in particular and the lower classes in general.

And there are the killings themselves. Here's someone who comes out of nowhere and starts butchering women. The killings get more savage and the mutilations worse as the murders progress. Then they stopped cold. That's another big part of it, I think, that there was no closure to the case. We can speculate endlessly. I once heard an expert on the case say that if they came out tomorrow and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt who the killer was, it wouldn't stop the speculation. People just love a mystery. That reminds me of a story I heard about the case of Anna Anderson, the woman who claimed to be the Grand Duchess Anastasia. Anastasia was murdered during the Russian Revolution, but Anderson claimed to be her. When they found the bodies of the Romanovs they were able to extract DNA and compare it to Anderson’s. I saw a TV show where some rabid supporters of Anderson’s were gushing about how thrilled they were with the test and that they’d accept the results either way. When the results showed Anderson wasn’t Anastasia, the supporters refused to accept the results.

So, what does everyone think? Any other thoughts? Comments? Criticism?

Hey,
I've posted some photos of the five accepted victims, three of the prime suspects and two of the most famous letters. I put the victims' photos in because I believe it's very important not to lose sight of what this jackass did to these women. The way serial killers are romanticized absolutely drives me nuts. There's nothing romantic about what these men, especially the Whitechapel killer, do to their victims. We need to remember them.
